If you have followed my articles for any length of time, you know that I am very interested in localizing your social media experience.
Twitter has just added a new feature that is sure to please some of you, and sure to keep others, like myself, in anxious anticipation.
You can now control the area you would like to see trends from. This is so exciting to business owners! Take a look at the photo below to see how to change your trending area.

There are some individual countries that you can follow trends on, as well as many US cities. For me, I doubt my city will be there for quite some time, but even Denver is missing from the list.
However, there is hope, as you can see from the message at the end, “Don’t see your location. We’re working on it.” I will take that as an indication that at least Denver should be coming online soon.
In the meantime, if you business is focused locally, you can find your own trending data from paying attention to any local hashtags, and combining that with knowledge of what people are talking about in the closest city to your location. It isn’t the best answer, but it is far better than only getting global trending data to rely on.
To change your trending location, simply scroll down and keep an eye on the right hand column. You will see the menu item, “Trending: Worldwide” and below it a link to change it. Once you click on the link to change the location a box will appear that is similar to the one above. Simply click on the country or city of your choice and your trending topics, which are displayed below this menu item, will change to the area of your choice.
It really is that simple, so take a moment to change your Twitter trending to as local as you can get it, and keep an eye on the choices for your real local area if it isn’t represented already.
